Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction in Singapore

A tooth extraction removes a tooth that cannot be saved, is badly decayed, loose, infected or causing dental problems. The dentist will first assess whether the tooth can be restored before recommending removal.

What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure used to remove a tooth when it cannot be saved or when removal is the best option for your oral health. It may be needed for reasons such as severe tooth decay, damaged teeth, infection, gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth or overcrowding.

At Best Smile Dental, our dentist will first assess your tooth condition and explain whether extraction is necessary. If the tooth can still be treated with other options, we will discuss them with you before deciding on the next step

Aftercare and Follow Up for Tooth Extraction

After tooth extraction, bite gently on the gauze as instructed to control bleeding. Avoid rinsing strongly, spitting forcefully, smoking, alcohol or using a straw during the first 24 hours.
Eat soft food and avoid chewing near the extraction area. Mild soreness or slight bleeding can happen at the beginning, but contact the clinic if there is heavy bleeding, worsening swelling or severe pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is having a tooth pulled painful?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain during the extraction. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal and managed with the medication and advice we provide.
Can a badly decayed tooth be saved instead of extracted?
Often yes. If enough healthy tooth structure remains, options such as a filling, root canal treatment and a crown may save the tooth. Extraction is usually recommended only when the tooth is too damaged to repair, loose from advanced gum disease, or causing repeated infection. Our dentist will explain the options before recommending removal.
How long does it take to heal after a tooth extraction?
The gum usually closes over within 1 to 2 weeks, while the bone underneath continues to heal over a few months. Following the first 24-hour aftercare closely helps avoid a painful dry socket and speeds recovery.
Should I replace a tooth after it is extracted?
For most teeth, yes. Leaving a gap can cause neighbouring teeth to drift and the opposing tooth to over-erupt, and the jawbone in the gap can shrink over time. We will discuss implant, bridge or denture options where suitable.
Can I claim CHAS or MediSave for a tooth extraction?
CHAS subsidies may be used for eligible tooth extractions, subject to your card type and claim limits. You may refer to the CHAS subsidy table above for the maximum subsidy amount per claim.
How long does the scaling and polishing appointment take?
A scaling and polishing appointment usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the condition of your teeth and the amount of plaque or tartar build-up.
MediSave is generally not used for routine tooth extraction, but may apply to selected surgical dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth surgery, where applicable.
How long does the tooth extraction appointment take?
A tooth extraction appointment usually takes around 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the tooth condition, tooth location and complexity of the extraction. Surgical cases may take longer.
How should I care for my teeth after tooth extraction?
Bite gently on the gauze as instructed to help control bleeding. Avoid rinsing your mouth strongly, spitting forcefully, or touching the extraction area for the first 24 hours. Eat soft food, keep the area clean and follow our dentist’s aftercare instructions. Attend review appointments if recommended.
