Scaling & Polishing

Scaling & Polishing in Singapore

A professional dental cleaning that removes plaque, tartar and surface stains to keep your gums and teeth healthy. It is commonly recommended every 6 months, or more often for patients with gum disease risk.

What Is Scaling & Polishing?

Scaling and polishing is a professional teeth cleaning treatment that helps remove plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. Even with daily brushing and flossing, plaque can still build up in hard-to-reach areas, especially between the teeth and along the gumline. When plaque hardens into tartar, it can no longer be removed by regular brushing and requires proper dental cleaning.

During scaling, the dentist gently removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and gumline using dental instruments. This helps reduce the risk of gum irritation, bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. After scaling, polishing is done to smoothen the surface of the teeth and remove minor stains, leaving your teeth feeling cleaner, fresher and smoother.
At Best Smile Dental, our dentist will first assess your tooth condition and explain whether extraction is necessary. If the tooth can still be treated with other options, we will discuss them with you before deciding on the next step

Aftercare and Follow Up for Scaling and Polishing

After scaling and polishing, your teeth may feel cleaner and smoother, but mild gum sensitivity can happen if there was heavy tartar build up or gum inflammation. Avoid very hot, cold or spicy food for a short time if your gums feel sensitive.
To maintain the result, brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and follow the recall interval recommended by the dentist. Patients with bleeding gums or gum disease risk may need more regular cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does scaling and polishing hurt?
Scaling and polishing may cause mild discomfort for some patients, especially if there is gum inflammation, sensitive teeth or heavy tartar build-up. You may also feel vibration, water spray or light scraping during the cleaning. Our dentist will clean your teeth gently and help you stay as comfortable as possible.
How often should I get scaling and polishing in Singapore?
For most people, every 6 months. If you have gum disease, bleeding gums, heavy tartar, or you smoke, our dentist may recommend every 3 to 4 months to keep your gums healthy and catch problems early.
Why do my gums bleed when my teeth are cleaned?
Bleeding usually means the gums are inflamed from plaque and tartar along the gumline, not that cleaning is harming them. Once the buildup is removed and you keep up good brushing and flossing, the bleeding normally settles within a week or two.
Can I use CHAS or MediSave for scaling and polishing?
CHAS subsidies may be used for scaling and polishing, subject to your eligibility and claim limits. You may refer to the CHAS subsidy table above for the maximum subsidy amount per claim.

MediSave is generally not used for routine scaling and polishing, as it usually applies to selected surgical dental procedures.
Will scaling whiten my teeth?
Scaling removes surface stains from coffee, tea, smoking and tartar, so teeth often look cleaner and brighter, but it does not change the natural colour of the teeth. For a whiter shade, professional teeth whitening is the better option.
How long does the scaling and polishing appointment take?
A scaling and polishing appointment usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the condition of your teeth and the amount of plaque or tartar build-up.
How should I care for my teeth after scaling and polishing?
Follow our dentist’s aftercare advice, maintain good brushing and flossing habits, and attend review appointments if recommended. Contact our clinic if you experience unusual pain, swelling, or bleeding.
