Gum Disease Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment in Singapore

Professional gum care for bleeding gums, gum inflammation, deep cleaning and advanced gum disease treatment. Gum disease treatment helps remove plaque, tartar and bacteria around the gums to reduce inflammation and protect the supporting tissues around your teeth.

What Is Gum Disease Treatment?

Gum disease treatment, also known as periodontal treatment, is used to manage gum inflammation, bleeding gums and infection around the teeth. Gum disease often starts as gingivitis, where the gums become red, swollen or bleed easily. If left untreated, it may progress into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease that can affect the bone and tissues supporting the teeth.
Treatment may include professional cleaning, deep cleaning, scaling and root planing, or gum disease surgery depending on the severity of the condition. In advanced cases, open flap debridement may be needed to clean deeper gum pockets more thoroughly.
At Best Smile Dental, our dentist will assess your gum condition carefully and explain the suitable treatment options before starting.

Gum disease can develop in different stages, from mild gum inflammation to more advanced infection affecting the supporting tissues around the teeth. The right treatment depends on the severity of your gum condition.

1

Healthy Gums

Healthy gums are usually firm, pink and do not bleed easily during brushing or flossing. Regular brushing, interdental cleaning and dental checkups help maintain healthy gums and prevent gum disease.

2

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. The gums may look red, swollen or bleed easily during brushing or flossing. At this stage, professional cleaning and better daily oral hygiene may help control the condition before it becomes more serious.

3

Moderate Periodontitis

Moderate periodontitis happens when gum disease progresses deeper below the gumline. It may cause deeper gum pockets, gum recession, persistent bad breath or tartar build-up around the teeth. Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, may be recommended to clean below the gumline.

4

Severe Periodontitis

Severe periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease where the supporting tissues and bone around the teeth may be affected. Some patients may notice loose teeth, gaps forming between teeth or discomfort when chewing. More detailed periodontal treatment, such as Open Flap Debridement, may be needed where clinically suitable.

Gum Disease Treatment Options

Professional Cleaning

Professional cleaning may be recommended for early gum problems such as mild bleeding gums, plaque build up or gum inflammation. It helps remove plaque and tartar around the teeth and gumline before the condition becomes more serious. This treatment also helps keep your gums cleaner and supports better oral hygiene. It is often part of regular dental care for patients who want to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and root planing is a deeper gum cleaning treatment for patients with gum disease or deeper gum pockets. It cleans below the gumline to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from the tooth roots. The root surfaces are also smoothened to help the gums heal and reattach better around the teeth. This treatment may be recommended when regular cleaning is not enough to manage gum disease.

Medications

Medications may be recommended as supportive care for gum disease treatment where needed. These may include antibacterial mouth rinses, antibiotics or other medication to help control infection and reduce bacteria. Medication is usually used together with professional gum treatment, not as a replacement for cleaning. Our dentist will advise whether medication is suitable based on your gum condition.

Periodontal Surgery (eg: Open Flap Debridement)

Periodontal surgery may be needed for advanced gum disease when deep gum pockets cannot be cleaned properly with non surgical treatment alone. Open flap debridement allows the dentist to gently access deeper areas around the tooth roots. This helps remove tartar, bacteria and infected tissue more thoroughly. The aim is to reduce infection, improve gum health and support the long term stability of your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gum disease reversible?
The early stage, gingivitis, is usually reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Once it advances to periodontitis and bone is lost, the damage cannot be fully reversed, but treatment can stop it getting worse and stabilise the gums.
Is gum disease treatment painful?
Gum disease treatment may cause mild discomfort, especially if your gums are inflamed, sensitive or have deep tartar build-up. Local anaesthesia may be used for deep cleaning or periodontal surgery where needed. Our dentist will help you stay as comfortable as possible throughout the treatment.
How do I know if I need gum disease treatment?
Our dentist will examine your teeth and gums to check for bleeding, swelling, gum pockets, tartar build-up, loose teeth or signs of bone loss. You may need gum disease treatment if you have bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession or persistent gum inflammation.
What treatment is needed for different types of gum disease?
The treatment depends on the severity of your gum condition. Early gum inflammation may be managed with professional cleaning, while periodontitis may require scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning. More advanced gum disease may require medication support or periodontal surgery such as Open Flap Debridement where clinically needed.
What is deep cleaning for gum disease?
Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, cleans below the gumline to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from deeper gum pockets. It may be recommended when gum disease has progressed beyond regular surface cleaning.
Can I use CHAS or MediSave for gum disease treatment?
CHAS subsidies may be used for selected eligible dental treatments related to gum care, subject to your card type and claim limits. You may refer to the CHAS subsidy table above for the maximum subsidy amount per claim.

MediSave may apply for selected surgical gum disease procedures, such as periodontal surgery, subject to MOH guidelines, your individual MediSave balance and eligibility. It is generally not used for routine scaling, polishing or non-surgical deep cleaning.
How long does the gum disease treatment appointment take?
A gum disease treatment appointment may take around 45 to 90 minutes, depending on your gum condition and the type of treatment needed. Deep cleaning may require more than one visit, while surgical cases may take longer.
How should I care for my gums after treatment?
Follow our dentist’s aftercare advice, brush gently, clean between your teeth daily and attend review appointments if recommended. Contact our clinic if you experience severe pain, swelling, heavy bleeding or symptoms that do not improve.
